1. The Competition Commission of Brunei Darussalam (CCBD), through its Executive Secretariat, conducted an advocacy session on the Competition Act, Chapter 253, for Brunei Fertiliser Industries Sdn Bhd (BFI) on 26 May 2026. This outreach programme was part of CCBD’s ongoing engagement with key industry players operating in Brunei Darussalam.
2. The session was attended by more than 30 personnel from the Marketing, Supply Chain Management and Procurement departments of BFI, reflecting CCBD’s targeted approach to building awareness of competition law among businesses in the manufacturing and downstream sectors, where compliance with the Act is critical to safeguarding fair and efficient markets.
3. Officers from the Executive Secretariat of CCBD provided an overview of the Competition Act, Chapter 253, including the three key prohibitions: anti-competitive agreements, abuse of dominant position, and mergers that substantially lessen competition. The session also addressed practical compliance considerations relevant to industrial businesses, such as the risks associated with information exchange between competitors, vertical supply arrangements, and conduct by firms holding significant market power.
4. The Executive Secretariat of CCBD highlighted that compliance with the Competition Act is a shared responsibility between the regulator and the business community, and reiterated CCBD’s commitment to working closely with industry to foster a culture of compliance that supports long-term competitiveness and innovation in Brunei Darussalam.
5. The session also covered CCBD’s Leniency Regime, under which any person or entity engaged in economic activity that come forward with information on cartel conduct may be granted immunity or a reduction in financial penalties, subject to the conditions set out in CCBD’s Guidelines on Leniency. Participants were further advised to refer to CCBD’s published guidelines, available on its website, for further reference on the application of the Competition Act.
6. Through such initiatives, CCBD continues to advocate the benefits of fair competition and foster a culture of compliance in Brunei Darussalam, in support of Wawasan Brunei 2035’s goal of building a dynamic and sustainable economy.
